An Ancient Legacy
For over 2,000 years, Jewish communities have been an integral part of Anatolia’s cultural tapestry. Historical evidence, including the visits of Tarsus native Paul the Apostle to synagogues for sermons, attests to their longstanding presence. These communities flourished during the Roman and Byzantine eras and found true independence during the Ottoman period, notably welcoming Jewish populations exiled from the Iberian Peninsula in the 15th century.
The Jewish Heritage Tour of Istanbul
To satisfy the curiosity of tourists about this enduring ethnic group, the “Jewish Heritage Tour of Istanbul” was established. This tour offers a unique opportunity to explore areas of special interest not covered by traditional routes. Led by expert guides, the tour combines sea boat, walking, and bus journeys to ensure a comprehensive and sustainable exploration of Jewish heritage in Istanbul Suleymaniye Mosque and Sacred Tombs.
The Quincentennial Foundation Museum
The museum, donated by the Neve Shalom Foundation to the Quincentennial Foundation in 1992, stands as a beacon of Turkish Jewish culture. Initially housing the Zulfaris Synagogue in 1671, the building now serves as the Quincentennial Foundation Museum of Turkish Jews, inaugurated in 2001 with the support of the Kamhi family and Naim A. Guleryuz.
Exhibits and Artifacts
Located in Karakoy, the museum’s entrance leads visitors through a courtyard adorned with Nadia Arditti’s sculpture, “Statue of the Rising Fire,” honoring Turkish Jews who served their country. Inside, cabinets and display windows offer insights into Turkish Jewish history, including their integration into daily life, military service, and cultural contributions. Exhibits cover a wide array of topics, from blood libel claims to the Jewish press during the Ottoman period, showcasing artifacts such as Torah scrolls and documents related to the Lausanne Treaty and Turkish diplomats’ efforts to save Jews during World War II Tour Guide Ensar.
